London Van's

It’s common knowledge these days that we need to do as much as possible to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our planet. From anti-plastic campaigns to electric vehicles, everyone is doing their bit to save the planet and it doesn’t stop there. This year the mayor of London has launched a van scrappage scheme to help small businesses and charities switch to low emission vehicles.

Do I Qualify For The Scrappage Scheme?

There are several different factors that contribute to your eligibility to be part of the scheme. Your business or charity must:

  • Be addressed in the City of London or London borough
  • Your business must have 10 or fewer employees
  • The business must be active in the UK
  • If it is a charity, then you must be registered with the Charity Commission

In order for the vehicle to qualify then it must:

  • Be road taxed with an MOT
  • The vehicle must have valid insurance for business
  • The van has to be owned by the micro-business/charity and has been purchased for more than 12 months before 22nd February 2019
  • The vehicle must be scrapped at an Authorised Treatment Facility
How Do I Apply For The Scheme?

In-order to check if you are eligible for the scheme, you can visit the Transport for London scrappage scheme webpage and check through all of the criteria. Once you have checked that you are eligible, you can then proceed to begin your application here and fill out the form.

If you want to qualify for funding that it is essential that you have your vehicle scrapped at an Authorised Treatment Facility. These are the only places that you are legally allows to scrap your vehicle as they do so in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. Once your vehicle has been scrapped, you should receive a Certificate of Destruction to prove that you are no longer liable for the vehicle.

To ensure you choose an Authorised Treatment Facility, visit Car.co.uk, where they can collect your vehicle for free and scrap it to the government-approved standards. Otherwise, you may be searching your local area for one and there is no guarantee that it is legal.

Once the vehicle has been scrapped, you can either choose to receive £6000 towards a new electric vehicle, of £3500 to fund cleaner transport alternative, you will have to choose which is best for your company.

What If My Vehicle Doesn’t Qualify For The Scheme?

There are several reasons why your vehicle might not qualify for the scrappage scheme, such as some of the criteria stated above. If this is the case then you could look at scrappage schemes provided by car manufacturers. Many of the main car companies offer scrappage schemes if you want to purchase one of their newer models, and they are still more energy efficient.

On the other hand, even if there is no scrappage scheme to suit your vehicle, you can still get some money for having your vehicle scrapped. Many websites will give you a valuation, collect your vehicle and scrap it free of charge. Be wary however if they try to offer you cash for the vehicle, as they are legally required to make the payment via cheque or bank transfer.
