Having some free space at home can be a great problem to have. One area which can sometimes be left empty is the loft and only used for storing things like the Christmas decorations and suitcases. With that in mind, we wanted to set out some loft conversion ideas which can really add to your home and provide you with more usable space.
Home Office
With the COVID-19 global pandemic forcing so many of us to work from home this year, and potentially for the near future as well, the home office has become more important than ever. Trying to get work done, take calls and participate in virtual meetings with family life taking place in the background can be very challenging. Having a dedicated space at home that you can work in without distractions can make a big difference to your productivity when working from home. It also allows you to separate your work and home life if you can keep all your work in one room. This can make it easier to disconnect at the end of the day if you’re not looking at stacks of paper and a work computer in the living room.
Using the loft as a home office is an excellent use of the space as even with a small loft, you should be able to get a desk and some office storage installed. It also allows you to put a floor between you and any noise in your home which may be distracting.
Games/Playroom
Keeping our homes tidy and free of clutter is important to a lot of us. If you have a busy family home, one thing which can often end up cluttering the floor is kid’s toys and games. Particularly when they’re young and haven’t learned to put their toys away after they’re finished playing with them, having a space they can call their own and play in is really useful. Using your loft as a playroom allows you to keep all their toys and games in one place and also store them away to keep the rest of your home nice and tidy.
If you kids have outgrown toys and moved onto computer games, this could be another use for the loft. Setting up space where they can enjoy their games away from everyone else in the house, so any frustration with the game doesn’t interrupt everyone else’s activities.
Home Gym
COVID-19 has also changed how many of us feel about going to places like gyms. Exercising and working out can be a fantastic way of releasing stress and relaxing along with getting healthy, so not having that gym environment can be a real miss for some people.
Creating a home gym is a really popular use of space and an excellent option for loft conversions. However, here are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, regardless of how much space you have available in your loft, you’ll need to factor in the weight of the gym equipment and if your current loft flooring will be suitable and safe. Taking advice from a builder is always advisable when looking to get your loft converted and especially if you’re looking to install a home gym. Secondly, with hot air rising, and if you’re going to be exercising in your loft conversion, you’ll need to think about temperature control. A simple solution which can provide you with ventilation and natural light would be to install some glass rooflights.
Art Studio
If art is important to you, then having your own space to get on with your work is a must. Converting your loft into an art studio is a great use of the space. It allows you to store all of your supplies in one place and keep your work safe away from everything else going on in your home. Unless you’re creating a dark room for photography development, natural light will be important, so as with a home gym, consider some rooflights if you can’t add traditional vertical windows. The other thing to remember if you decided to create an art studio is the access to your loft. If you plan on making large sculptures, having an art studio in your loft might not be the best idea as getting your work out of the studio may be a challenge!
Overall converting your loft into another usable space in your home can produce some fantastic results which really enhance your life and the house. Hopefully, the ideas we highlighted above have helped if you’ve been thinking of converting your loft! If you have any other ideas, why not share them in the comments.
