What IS Physiotherapy And How Can It Help Me?

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a treatment based on massage and manipulation that helps treat various illnesses, injuries and disabilities. This treatment performed by trained and skilled physiotherapists helps restore movement, helps with pain relief and it can reduce your risk of injury in the future.

When Should You Have Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a great therapy for people of all ages and all walks of life. The treatment is helpful for a range of health conditions including conditions affecting the joints and bones, the brain and nervous system, the heart and circulation and the lungs and breathing.

Typically physiotherapy can help with back pain, sports injuries, movement problems from a stroke or Parkinson’s disease and rehabilitation after a heart attack. The aim of physiotherapy is to help movement and stiffness and to stop any discomfort and pain.

What Is A Physiotherapist?

A physiotherapist or physio is a person specially trained in physiotherapy and regulated by a national body. They often work as part of a team with other health professionals like doctors and nurses, and in a number of settings such as hospitals, clinics, community health centres and sports clubs.

Some physios offer home physiotherapy treatments. This is particularly useful for people who are housebound or have no transportation as it’s a convenient solution to help with your treatment. You do not have to leave your home or organise transport to get to your appointment if you have home physiotherapy treatment.

What Do Physiotherapists Do?

Physios help to assess their client’s problems and provide a plan for care. The manual treatment includes manipulation and massage to help relieve stiffness and improve mobility. They can also tailor exercises to help their clients strengthen muscles too.

A big part of what physiotherapists do is educate and advise as well. Many people do not know how to lift and carry properly and physios can show you how to do this correctly without injury. Many people have poor posture, such as slouching when working on a laptop or computer and physios can educate on body posture, how to sit correctly and how you should hold yourself to help prevent injuries in the future.

How Do You Find A Physiotherapist?

You can find a physiotherapist through a referral from your GP or in some areas you can refer yourself. If you have private health care you can also go privately. This will generally be quicker than through the NHS and could be an option if you have the money or private medical insurance. Physiotherapy for pain relief can really help so going private is something you may want to consider if you are in a lot of pain as you can be seen quicker.

So as you can see physiotherapy treatment is a very valuable treatment for a variety of conditions. If you are experiencing any issues related to movement, injury or illness check if you can have physiotherapy treatment as it may improve your quality of life and help relive and irradicate any pain you may be feeling.

Let me know, have you had physiotherapy?
