A trip to Scotland is often a delight for those not from the nation. While some Scots are self-deprecating in the extreme, it’s a beautiful nation. Living here, you get an almost instant sense of the charm and beauty of the Scots people, and arguably that is found most authentically in its beautiful capital, Edinburgh.
The capital of Scotland is a truly stunning city and is easily among the most impressive on the British Isles. However, like most capital cities, knowing where to go can be tough!
Where, then, should you start?
Things To Do In Edinburgh
Go To Edinburgh Castle
Of course, few locations are more enjoyable to visit than the amazing Edinburgh castle. Take the time to climb the steps atop the Royal Mile and visit a rather special location indeed. You’ll see plenty of sights here, from the Half Moon Battery to the amazing St. Margaret’s Chapel.
Visit the Edinburgh Zoo. The Zoo is a special place in the capital, and you will find ample opportunity to have some fun and just relax. You’ll even get to see the famous pandas of Edinburgh zoo – often, it’s the first time most people from the UK get to see one up-close and personal.
Go On A Pub Crawl
There is an easy way to enjoy Edinburgh – do it like a real Scotsman. Go for a bite to eat in one of the countless Edinburgh restaurants, and then head on out. You’ll find everything from classic whiskey bars to sports bars, so simply take your pick, head on out and be sure to note down a taxi number to get back to your hotel – you’ll need it!
We recommend that you take the time to head underground, too, to the amazing Blair Street underground vaults. You can find all manner of tours for this, and its’ the kind of thing that you will find pretty hard to forget: it’s a fantastic contrast to the luxurious living that so many manage in the capital today.
Things To See In Edinburgh
Take a look around Edinburgh Dungeon
Of course, no trip to the capital would be complete without a wee look at the Edinburgh Dungeon. It’s a haunting place, and it should give you a full example of just how gruesome life might have been back in the day – even in a city as opulent as this.
The Scottish National Gallery
If you are a fan of national history, then you absolutely need to come along to the Scottish National Gallery. You will find all manner of stunning art from celebrity names like Monet and Rembrandt.
Don’t worry, this isn’t some cheap knock-off Scottish version of Hollywood. It’s the Scottish Parliament: the seat of (some) of the major decisions made in Scotland. You can even take a tour of the Parliament – who knows? You might even meet the enigmatic and popular First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon!
There’s much to enjoy about Edinburgh, and a lot of it we simply cannot cover. From taking in an Edinburgh Derby between Hibernian and Heart of Midlothian to an enjoyable afternoon taking in the many cultural events on show, you will always find that a trip to Edinburgh is very much worth your time. Start with the above, and see where this mythical and stunning city eventually takes you!
