What To Consider If Becoming Self-Employed

If you’re considering becoming self-employed there are plenty of things you need to consider. You need money saved, a great idea and a demand for the product or skill. Let’s have a look at some of these things to help your new business get the best start, to make it successful.

Do You Have A Niche?

Firstly you need to do some research. Do you have a niche in the market? Is the idea unique? Is anyone in your area doing the same? Of course, there needs to be a demand for the product or service so think about that. If you are thinking of setting up a shop, check out the local high street and think if your shop would fit in well. If not, look at other towns that are easy to get to, the demographics and where the shop would work.

Do You Have A Skill?

Are you skilled in an area that will help you become self-employed? If not consider getting the skills you need to run your business before it starts. For example, you wouldn’t set up a hairdresser without knowledge of the hair industry, and if you are going to be working there, the knowledge to cut hair. However, even if you don’t have a skill, a little research can go far.  Not an expert in graphics? There are a number of sites out there where you can get svgs for free – free vector graphics for your website.

If You Don’t Can You Afford To Pay?

If you need to pay for someone skilled in an area or general staff, can you afford to do that? It may be something as simple as employing shop staff if you are opening a shop or outsourcing a skill elsewhere. Your taxes need to be completed, so if you are not employing an accountant think about learning how to do your taxes.

What Is Your Budget?

You need money to start a business – at the simplest terms, you need money for stock, staff, and bills. So draw up a realistic budget.  It makes sense to have some money saved before you start a business for these bills but also a buffer fund to keep your business afloat in the early days. Make sure you have at least 6-12 months money behind your business if possible. Many people look for funding including loans to start a business, you can even get a loan after bankruptcy

Record Keeping

Keep all records for your business, so you can do your tax return at the end of the tax year. On the simplest level, incomings, and outgoings and then the profit made. You can do this on a simple spreadsheet, however, there is also accounting software to help you if needed.

Personal And Business Insurance

If you’re running your own business, it’s important to make sure you’re insured.
You will certainly need some kind of business cover, such as public liability and equipment insurance. You also need to consider if you need a business bank account. A business bank account can help keep your personal and business separate, especially if you are in a partnership

As you can see there are many things to consider if you are thinking of becoming self-employed. I hope this article has been helpful to you. Good luck with your business.
