Changing Your Lifestyle In 2020 To Be A Better You

Walking Health

The new year — and a new decade — is here, and it’s a great time to think about our lifestyle choices and how we can change or tweak them to live happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives. These, after all, are the essential keys to happiness, as you can have all the money in the world, and have none of them, and be miserable. So how can you go about fine-tuning your lifestyle going into 2020 and boosting your wellbeing and overall contentment?

It’s all about the body and mind. Let’s start with the body first, because for many people it’s often neglected. Neglect means not getting enough exercise and not feeding it properly. The result of this is that rates of obesity, heart disease and other lifestyle-related illnesses and conditions have skyrocketed around the world in recent times, leaving many people dependent on medications and thoroughly unhappy with how they feel, and look. It shouldn’t have to be like this.

Analyse Your Diet

We can all make a start at improving our health by looking at what we put into our bodies — you don’t have to go through a radical overhaul of your diet to get into shape and be healthier. By now, many people have realised the sort of crash diets that have been popular in recent times just don’t work. While your weight might dramatically drop off over a couple of weeks or more, the process is not exactly comfortable, leaving you hungry and with low energy, and soon enough the weight will creep back up again. Plus, losing weight in a short timeframe is not good for the body, as it places too many stresses on various systems.

A wiser way is to look at what you typically eat and drink and appraise each item — whether it’s something you make at home or buy in the shops. Paying close attention to what food and drink products are made of will go a long way towards turning an unhealthy diet into one that’s great for you.

Avoid Fake Food

As a general guide, if something has an enormous amount of ingredients in it, including lots of numbers and strange words, chances are it’s not a natural food and therefore kind of artificial. Put it down and move along the aisle until you find items with just a few ingredients, meaning they’re as close to their natural state as possible and will support your health. Opt for wholegrain and wholewheat rice and pasta, for instance, as they contain the fibre and added nutrients that are stripped away in the carb-heavy white versions —and they taste great.

The message here is to try and avoid processed foods and drinks — including “no calorie” soft drinks — as much as possible. Instead of sugar, these drinks contain a sweetener, which is probably not good for you either. You could also get in touch with the joy of cooking for you and your family. If you don’t have time during the week, due to work and other pressures, you can always do a big cook at the weekend and put the leftovers in the freezer for the weekdays.

Stop Smoking

If you’re a smoker going into the new year and decade, perhaps now is the time to finally try and quit the habit that’s robbing you of your health. As the NHS advises, using e-cigarettes is one of the most effective ways of quitting, giving you the nicotine you want but none of the many thousands of chemicals released by burning tobacco. Many smokers like to use nicotine salts for their e-liquid, as it’s a type that gives a satisfying amount of nicotine and helps prevent them from returning to smoking. You can order supplies easily and affordably from a good online vape store. Over time, you can gradually reduce the amount of nicotine in your e-liquid, until your refills have none, and just vape for the many fruity and other flavours.

Then, with your newfound vigour and zest for life, you’ll be perfectly placed to embark on a New Year fitness plan that will have you looking amazing.
